Buyer Beware

Despite the repeated mention of Japanese steel and craftsmanship, and despite Katsura being a Japanese name, this blade is made in China. Which does not necessarily mean it is bad, but it does mean that Bear Hollow Supply’s description is disingenuous at best, and that the blade is quite overpriced. As the other review says, do not expect the knife in the photos. That blade either was acid etched for contrast or the photo contrast was radically doctored. The inside of the handle casting where the scales are expected to fit is indeed rough. The blade is thin at the spine but the grind is rather steeply beveled and crude, by Japanese standards anyway, and the balance is only perfect if you like it quite blade heavy. If this really is the kind of knife you want, there are places that sell it for much less and don’t waste a lot of copy trying to make it sound like something it isn’t.

Hello Jack,
Thank you for this review and bringing it to our attention. We are going to look into this brand and the quality. We appreciate the input.

Beautiful Blade! Not so great handle.

I recently purchased this as a gift for my father. I was immediately struck by how beautiful the Damascus pattern is, even thought the Damascus contrast is nowhere near as dark in real life. The blade is sharp and true, requiring a lot of painters tape and cardboard to avoid cutting myself (again) while working on the handle. The handle construction needs work though. Where the tang meets the front bolster and rear butt is not ground to 90degrees, making fitting the wood handle scales very difficult. After 2 failed attempts to make scales that perfectly match the metal, I gave up and filled the small gaps with black epoxy. The end result was still spectacular, but would suggest the company have the quality/precision machining of the handle match what they did to the blade. On a side note, the box it comes in is also an excellent presentation box.
