Table Leg Sizing Guide

You've got the top. Here's how to make sure the legs are right for it. These are the same rules we give customers on the phone every day.

1. How wide can my top be?

Find the leg's widest point where it sits on the floor (it's listed on every leg's size chart). Multiply that by 1.75. That's the maximum top width we recommend for that leg.

Example: a leg that's 24" wide at the floor comfortably carries a top up to 42" wide.

If your top is wider than that, size up to a wider leg. If you're between two sizes, we'd rather see you go wider than narrower.

2. How thick should my top be?

Thickness is your call. 3", 4", or even 5" thick tops all work great and the legs don't care. Thinner tops are possible too, but once a top gets thin, attaching the legs securely takes a little more thought. If you're working with a thin top, reach out and we'll talk it through.

3. How long can my top be?

On a regular set of legs, about as long as you want. Length is up to you.

The one exception is pedestal bases. A pedestal under a square or round top can be tricky, so if that's your plan, check with us first.

4. Should I add a stretcher rod?

We recommend it on most tables. A stretcher rod ties the two legs together, looks great, and doubles as a footrest. It isn't a must on smaller tables, but it's one of those things people are glad they added.

  • Stretcher rods fit our cast table legs only. Steel legs and pedestal bases don't take one.
  • Legs 22" tall or under take the smaller rod. Legs taller than 22" take the larger rod.

5. Attaching the legs

Every set of metal table legs ships with threaded inserts and bolts. The exact install steps and sizes vary by leg line, so follow the instruction sheet that comes in your box.

Still not sure?

Leave your number below and Pam will call to walk you through it. Have your top's width, thickness, and length handy and she'll tell you exactly which legs fit. We're a small team in Ohio and we'd rather spend five minutes helping you get it right than have you guess.
